How I Write

My writing sessions are pretty simple. Coffee, gotta have that. And music is a must, hopefully its music that fits the mood of what I am writing.

  • Clean Desk

    No, I don't have a clean desk. I mean, it's not super cluttered, but I have my faery statue, my trolls, my wax melt burner and of course, books. The books are mostly on writing.

  • Defined Working Times

    I still work as a software developer, so I don't have the luxury of a set working time. As developers, we keep strange hours sometimes. But that's okay. Instead of a set working time, I just try to write a certain number of words a day. NovNov2025, the ProWriting Aid Event in November, taught me the value of writing everyday. I met the 50,000 words in a month and exceeded it.

  • No Distractions

    I put my head phones on and find a You Tube channel for an Immersive Writing Session or just an instrumental sound track that I like. Shutting out the world is very effective and makes a huge difference

I love my Mac. I had been a Windows developer for decades, but the Mac really is outstanding when it comes to content generation and writing.

Books

Writing Needs Some Reading

Read. If you want to know about a genre, read that genre. It is always useful to read, besides the fantastic stories which keep us ever entertained.

Evernote

Essential

The thing I love about Evernote is that I can use it anywhere. It's on my phone, tablet and macbook. If I am out running around and I get hit with inspiration, all I have to do is open it up, jot down what I am thinking and then I have it for later.

Plottr

Essential

I tried pantsing once. Once. Now I plot and I used Plottr to do it. Fantastic program and I highly recommend it.

Scrivener

Love it!

I use Scrivener as my primary writing application. It is so useful and versatile. Wonderful application.

ProWriting Aid

This is what I use to edit my work. It has a ton of features and reports, from telling you about passive tense to words you use too often and the grade level you are writing at and more.

Write A Lot

Of course, you want to try and write everyday on your WIP, but it is also fun to just play with words. Write in a new way. Challenge yourself. Experiment.

Read A Lot

Read every chance you get, whether it is to learn something new or to just be entertained. Read the classics, read modern fiction, read junk. You'll learn something from each and every one.

Spread Your Ideas

Whether your ideas are good or bad, we write for the world and it is an opportunity to share your particular point of view. Make people think or just entertain them. It all has value.
